Er is een kat in de kerstboom geklommen…….
En ze heeft ervoor gezorgd dat enkele kerstballen op de grond gevallen zijn. Gelukkig zijn ze niet gebroken en ik ben vooral blij dat deze met de blauwe vogel het overleefd heeft.
De kerstbal met de blauwe vogel is er gekomen op vraag van mijn Amerikaanse nichtje Diane. Vorig jaar in april heeft ze ons bezocht en zagen we elkaar terug na exact 50 jaar. Zoals 50 jaar geleden konden we het weer goed met elkaar vinden. We hebben samen enkele dagen door Gent gezworven en zo ook de tentoonstelling over schrijver M.Maeterlinck gezien. Maeterlinck is de nobelprijswinnaar die het theaterstuk “De blauwe vogel” schreef. Sinds dan is een blauwe vogel voor Diane het symbool voor Gent en haar verblijf bij ons en de familie.
In Brugge kocht ze twee blauwe vogels voor in de kerstboom, één voor ons en één voor bij haar thuis. Daardoor zijn we met kerstmis wat meer met elkaar verbonden, we kijken eens naar onze kerstboom waar de blauwe vogel in zit en denken eens aan elkaar.
De vogel heb ik gestempeld met textielverf en een Indische houten stempel.
Uiteindelijk is de top van mijn kerstquilt afgewerkt en ligt hij netjes in de kast te wachten om gequilt te worden.

Hello. I am Diane, Catrien’s American cousin. It was so wonderful to see Catrien’s holiday quilt and receive her Bluebird Ornament tribute and the sharing of our story.
I knew it would be interesting and fun to see my Belgium family (mom’s side) after so many years, but I hadn’t imagined such a special and wonderful time it would turn out to be.
Being with Catrien turned out to be one of the most special re-connections and bonds in my life. We got to truly get to know each other and had a great time in many different ways.
Both she and her husband were so welcoming, warm, gracious and giving.
I am in awe of Catrien’s quilts and crafts. She is so creative and I think brave and adventurous with trying so many different kinds of techniques and projects. Stunning, meaningful creations are the result. She has inspired me to create a quilt with a friend of mine. My friend is a quilter, I am a beginning bird photographer. We are jointly creating a shorebird quilt based on the beautiful bay/marsh lands we live near, incorporating some of my pictures printed on fabric, like Catrien’s St. Bavo quilt.
More rewarding though is the reconnecting and now lasting friendship we have started and will continue to have. It has taught me to stay connected more closely with family and friends, and continue to celebrate the special things each has about themselves and be grateful for them.
